HELP

Frequently asked questions.

What to expect from the level test, the lessons and the private beta.

Getting started

Is the level test really free?

Yes. You can take the level test without an account, login or payment card. Your result can be carried into an account if you join later.

Do I need to join the beta to take the test?

No. The guest level test is open now. Access to the learning app is currently through the private beta.

I'm a complete beginner. Where should I start?

You can begin with HSK 1. It starts with first greetings, and pinyin and word meanings are available as you learn. You do not have to take the level test first.

I already know some Mandarin. Will I have to start over?

No. The level test climbs through the HSK levels, checks the placement it finds, and points you to a chapter to start from.

How do I get access to the app?

Apply through Join the Beta. If a place opens up, we'll email an invitation to the address you used. Applying does not create an account or ask for a password.

Learning and reviews

What happens in a lesson?

You meet a chapter's sentences one at a time in both directions. Recall the meaning or the Mandarin, reveal the answer and rate how it felt. Your rating sets when that sentence comes back for review.

How is Fushi different from Anki?

Fushi uses FSRS v6 for scheduling, but the HSK 1–6 curriculum is already authored and ordered. Sentences have audio, tone guides and word meanings, and practice includes listening and speaking as well as reviews.

What if I miss a day?

There is no streak to protect. Your reviews remain in the schedule, and the map reflects when recall needs attention again.

Can I change my review workload?

Yes. Settings include a retention target, daily limits and a learn-ahead window. Each review grade also shows the next interval before you choose it.

Speaking practice

Do I need a microphone?

Only for shadowing and Freetalk. The language map, lessons, reviews and dictation can be used without one.

What is shadowing?

You hear a sentence and say it back. Fushi shows the words that need attention and lets you inspect what the browser transcribed.

What is Freetalk?

Freetalk gives you an open prompt at a level you have studied. You speak in Mandarin, review the feedback, and can add suggested correction cards to your review deck.

Your account

Will my progress follow me between devices?

Yes. Signed-in progress is cached on your device and synchronised to your account. Sign in on another device to pick up where you left off.

Can I change the appearance of the app?

Yes. The learning app has Ink and Parchment color schemes and several map themes in Settings.
